One Month Down, a Lifetime to Go

One Month Down, a Lifetime to Go

Saturday marked one month since The Hunger Truck launched. In four short weeks, our incredible team of volunteers and donors have provided more than 600 hot, nutritious meals to community members experiencing homelessness, our neighbors in Fifth Ward, and most recently, refugees from Afghanistan.

After picking up the weeks’ meals from The Peri Peri Factory, we traveled to an apartment complex in West Houston. Immediately, we were surrounded by children and their contagious energy as they rode on their bikes, skipped, and passed around high-fives. Truly a sight to see. You couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces if you tried.

More than 150 Afghan refugees live at that apartment complex. That’s more than 150 men, woman, and children who add to the diversity of the beautiful city we know and love, the one they now call home. Diversity is a pillar of Houston’s culture- it is the reason we are spoiled with so many options for dinner, the reason we feel comfortable wearing traditional clothes when shopping for groceries, and the reason this project has thrived over the last month. The Hunger Truck will continue to cultivate a sense of belonging for all as we serve Houstonians in every part of the city each Saturday.
